Studies have shown that over the past few decades, the mortality rate of cancer patients has steadily declined. Although the death rates have dropped across the board, the most significant decline has been seen in the younger patients. According to the study, conducted by the American Association for Cancer Research, the decline began to accelerate gradually 30 years ago, with the death rates expected to drop even further in the next decade.

Why has there been a drop? Eric Kort a scientist at Van Andel Research Institute in Grand Rapids, Mich. Says:

“Our efforts against cancer, including prevention, early detection and better treatment, have resulted in profound gains, but these gains are often unappreciated by the public due to the way the data are usually reported”

Unfortunately, even with the current rate of decline, cancer will still surpass heart disease as the leading cause of death, in the year 2010. Despite the declines, heart disease continues to show larger drops in the mortality rate, and cancer incidence rates continue to grow, nullifying the declining percentage of death rates.

“When calculating proportional mortality, we start with the assumption that everyone dies of something eventually, so you take 100 deaths and calculate, based on death certificates, what those people have died from” said Richard Severson, Ph.D., a cancer epidemiologist and associate chair of the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences

Regardless of the continuing growth in incidence rates, increasingly effective screening and treatment are continuing to prove that childhood cancer, such as lymphoma, do not need to be a death sentence.

Making the decision to attend one of the adult weight loss camps you’ve been checking out is an important one. It signals your commitment to dropping the weight you need in order to be healthy and happy.  Yet, for many people who have reached this point, their journey on the path to a better version of themselves has been fraught with failure after failure. Even though they’re shelling out the money for a weight loss retreat (and they are often quite a significant investment), they might not be expecting results that are any better than what they’ve had before. And unfortunately, this kind of attitude can doom them before they’ve even done their first exercise routine.

However, one of the most important things you can bring to "Fat Farms" is a positive attitude. The trainer’s role in these programs is not only to provide instruction on how to work out, but to help get clients motivated. If they have a negative mindset, it will be that much harder for the trainer to motivate them to succeed.

Additionally, one of the benefits of this type of program is that you can interact with people who are dealing with similar circumstances. If you have a negative attitude, it can affect those around you. However, your positivity can help others succeed. Stay positive for both yourself and others.

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids. These acids cannot be made by the body and must be accumulated from food. It is found in things such as fish and nut oils. These Omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial to the body in several ways.

Diets high in omega-3 fatty acids help lower triglycerides and increase HDL (good) cholesterol. They also act as a slight anticoagulant to prevent blood clots. There are studies that also prove they help lower high blood pressure.

Omega-3 fatty acids may also protect against the build of a body protein linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Studies had encouraging results, DHA is the omega fatty acid found to do this. It offers breast cancer protection; women with high intakes of omega-3 fatty acids have a 50% lower chance of getting breast cancer. Studies have shown that it improves infertility as fish oil balances hormones and increases blood flow to the uterus. It also reduces PMS symptoms. Omega-3s also offer protection against osteoporosis, minimizes menopausal problems, and lessens postpartum depression.

Fish oil is essential to a healthy pregnancy diet.Omega-3 fatty acids help placental blood flow so there is an efficient exchange of nutrients and oxygen between mom and baby. Chances of preeclampsia (high blood pressure during pregnancy) are also reduced as it helps maintain healthy blood pressure and lower the danger of premature birth. A baby’s brain development has also been show to be especially dependent on omega 3 fish oil. It also improves motor skills and eyesight.

Omega-3’s help in diabetes and with weight loss by helping to maintain control over blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Clinical research also suggests that they may help with asthma by decreasing inflammation and improving lung function. Studies are being done to see if omega-3 fatty acids my reduce the symptoms of ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Again, it does this by decreasing the inflammation, but it can have side effects such as belching, bloating, diarrhea and flatulence.

In this day and age, it seems almost silly to have different programs in a fitness boot camp for girls or boys. We have become so accustomed to arguments for equality of the sexes that some people might automatically want to scream about discrimination.  However, the truth is that there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to a fitness vacation or boot camp training regime. Not only is every individual unique with their own physiology and their own goals, men and woman tend to have somewhat different goals when it comes to losing weight.

The majority of men who attend weight loss summer camps are interested in building muscle mass as well as shedding pounds. Arms, shoulders, and legs tend to be the areas where they want to increase muscle, which means targeted weight training.

Women, on the other hand, tend to focus more on losing weight alongside the toning of specific areas. Flexibility and core strength are also important areas of focus. In order to make this sort of change, full body training is recommended, along with function strength training and circuit training.

When it comes to choosing a workout routine, you should be less concerned about what other people are doing and focus more on what works best for you. After all, your neighbor’s workout won’t necessarily help you meet your goals.

Studies have linked green tea to increased heart health, lower cholesterol levels and weight loss. A recent medical trial demonstrates that the ingredients in green tea may also slow the rate of prostate cancer.

Louisiana State University conducted a small study with 26 prostate cancer participants; all who were scheduled for prostate surgery. For approximately 34 days, participants, ranging in age from 41 to 72 years, were given Polyphenon E, an antioxidant found in green tea that is widely credited as a cancer fighter. The men took 800 milligrams of the green-tea extract ECGC and Polyphenon E. Their intake levels are equivalent to approximately 12 cups of green tea per day.

The study results, published in Cancer Prevention Research, found that the concentrated extract ingested by the men, reduced growth factors and serum markers used to predict the progression of prostate cancer. Of the participants, some showed reduced growth factors by 30 percent. These results lead James A. Cardelli, Ph.D., head author of the study, to conclude that Polyphenon E can work in conjunction with a healthy diet to prevent and slow down cancer progression.

Other studies, including one conducted in Japan, do not show a definitive link between green-tea extracts and prostate cancer. However, results show that green tea may reduce the progression of low-risk tumors. More clinical trials are needed to fully assess the effects of green tea on prostrate cancer because it remains unclear if tea polyphenols work alone or in combination with diet and other cancer treatments.
