One of the most popular cosmetic dentistry procedures out there is tooth whitening. While people’s tooth enamel generally starts out white and healthy-looking, it suffers wear and tear over the years due to chewing, the acidity of certain foods we eat, and sometimes even trauma. It’s no surprise that so many people are interested in laser teeth whitening along with more traditional methods.

The key to the yellowish color that many of us see when we smile in the mirror is the core of the tooth: a material called dentin. This yellow substance remains intact while the enamel surrounding it wears down. This allows the yellow to show through. Additionally, chewing creates micro-fractures in the enamel that can be filled by stain-causing debris. Even if you’re not to the point where you need porcelain veneers, there is a good chance that you’d like to improve the look of your teeth.

Ever considered checking what actually goes into the beauty products you use everyday like shampoo, shower gel and makeup? Or do you just assume that if it has made its way to a supermarket shelf, it must be safe? Not true.

According to the Environment Working Group the FDA has 10,500 ingredients documented as being used in personal care products. Out of these ingredients, only 1,155 or 11 percent has been assessed for safety by the cosmetic industry. Interestingly, the FDA does not require personal care product manufacturers to register with them, nor are they needed to file a list of ingredients used in their product. These manufacturers are also not required to report any injury occurring due to the use of their products.

One such ingredient is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate. They are found commonly in close to 90 percent of foaming products like bubble bath, body wash, shampoo, toothpaste, make-up and even mouthwash. Apart from being used as an ingredient in these products, SLS and SLES are used to degrease car engines, clean garage floors and wash cars. These two chemicals are considered dangerous due to their denaturing properties, rending unpredictable changes to other ingredients when combined.

The American College of Toxicology reports eye malformation in children due to SLS and SLES, while animal studies indicate it caused eye damage, depression, diarrhoea and laboured breathing. A number of cases of skin irritation and outbreaks have also been accounted. Research also indicates they act as oestrogen mimics and could be linked to PMS, menopause, male infertility and breast cancer.

Becoming an orthopedic surgeon is one of the most difficult and long processes and yet it is said to be one of the most fulfilling. The study program takes at least fourteen years from the day you start college, which may seem like an eternity to anyone who is considering the profession. However, the years are guaranteed to fly by as a medical student and orthopedic resident as they are years of personal growth and unforgettable experiences that will keep you on your toes all of the time.

The reason orthopedic surgeons have such a long training period is due to the specific skills that are required for the job. Most of these skills are acquired along the way as they are practiced day-in and day-out. These skills vary from surgeon to surgeon but the best orthopedic surgeons have good mechanical ability, excellent three dimensional visualization and a high degree of manual dexterity.

Orthopedics is an extremely competitive field. 170 accredited programs in the US prepare students for just 650 residency positions and the training requires four years of college, four years of medical school and five years in an accredited orthopedic residency program. Once the residency program has been completed candidates must practice as orthopedic surgeons for two years. It is after these two years that the candidates must sit for written and oral examinations by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. It is only after all this that the candidate will become a general orthopedic surgeon.
