We all own at least one toothbrush and yet we probably never give much thought to where our toothbrush came from. A toothbrush is usually made out of plastic and nylon. The hard plastic handle makes it easy to grasp. The bristles are made out of nylon.

For thousands of years, humans had been using various methods to clean their teeth. The ancient Egyptians would sometimes use course substances like salt and a rag to get their teeth clean. This wasn’t a very efficient method and eventually people begin to use sticks of wood that were frayed around the edges.

In 1498, the Chinese crafted a handle with the stiff hairs of a hog attached to it for brushing their teeth. This idea was modified over the years and finally made its way to Europe and America. For many years, people continued to use the stiff hairs of a hog or boar. It wasn’t till the 1930s that DuPont finally made a toothbrush with nylon bristles. It took a few years for this idea to catch on.

After World War II ended, various manufacturers took over the idea transforming both the handles and the bristles of toothbrushes. It took a few years and some advertising campaigns to get everyone on board with brushing their teeth daily.
