An estimated ninety percent of people suffering from diabetes have type 2 diabetes. The pancreas of type 2 diabetics produce insulin, but, either the insulin production is insufficient, or their bodies cannot use the insulin properly. Type 2 diabetics can vastly improve their chances of avoiding the more serious effects of the disease by instituting a major lifestyle change.

Although diabetes is a complicated disease, there are four simple changes a person can make to improve the odds. First of all, sugar must be eliminated from the diet. There is no way to have your cake and eat it, too, so get rid of the cake. Be wary of sugar-free items. They are void of food value, so partake sparingly. Your body needs carbohydrates to keep your blood sugar regulated, but make them count.

Next eliminate anything white from your diet. This includes rice, pasta, potatoes, white bread, and, if you are from the South, grits. This is simple to remember and will produce dramatic results in your blood sugar levels, as well as your weight.

Always count carbohydrates. This cannot be stressed enough. A total carbohydrate intake of around one hundred and sixty-five per day, including snacks, is a starting point. Then, adjust according to individual needs. Read labels, and remember that getting the most nutrient value possible from your food is extremely important to a person suffering from type 2 diabetes.

Lastly, add exercise to your life. It is an important tool in taking control of your diabetes.
